Our high school has one of the largest food science programs in the state, even though we are an ESL school with 60% mobility. We are fortunate enough to have 3 levels of food science available to our students. The classes start with basic food skills and go up through the college level catering class. Our classes are popular, and for some families food can be sparse, so items prepared in class can help feed these students. We also emphasize healthy and affordable food preparation.
Colorado's number one industry is tourism and hospitality, thus skills learned in these classes often transfer into job related skills. Absolutely key to instruction in all these courses is teaching hand washing and sanitation practices, which then become long term memory and practice.
