My advanced art students come from from diverse cultural backgrounds. Many are from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, where they may have parents with limited English and education skills that can stifle support with homework. They may come from households where both parents work two or more jobs. Their parents may be absent, where some students live with their grandparents, aunts, in a group home or some may be homeless. They may have limited resources at home and receive free and reduced meals at school. However, even with some of the obstacles and challenges that they may face in their home lives or communities, my advanced art students are motivated, critical thinkers and thrive on the creative process. They attend a school that, while it's labeled "under-performing," is filled with passionate and dedicated teachers. My advanced art students may have some struggles, but they look to the future brightly and have definite plans to pursue the unique careers that the arts have to offer.
