The students at our high school feel this way every day. Without lockers available to them and with textbooks growing larger and heavier each year, many students appear crippled by the weight of their backpacks. Our school is a small, urban high school located on a community college campus. Our student population is ethnically diverse and many of our students are identified as being socio-economically disadvantaged. Our students are concurrently enrolled in both high school and college classes which inevitably adds to their loads physically, mentally, and academically.
