Half of my ELLs are students with special needs who are struggling readers expected to pass the state exams and be college ready. Some of them have interrupted formal education, most come from impoverished areas. The school is providing them with different instructional services and the most recent one is the purchase of a reading program that requires technology. One thing is for sure, they are tech savvy and excited about this new program. This students have been through a lot; two years ago, our school almost closed and next year, the Panel for Educational Policy has voted to co-locate another school in our building which will result in sharing of our resources.
Besides learning English, non Spanish learners of English also learn a third language with a goal of becoming global citizens. I am extremely proud of my students for overcoming the obstacles, trying so hard to achieve their dreams, and staying true to who they are as individuals with different cultural backgrounds.
