I have the privilege of teaching environmental science and biology to juniors and seniors at a science charter school. Students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds from communities throughout city. My students are racially diverse as well, identifying themselves primarily as Hispanic, Polynesian, or Caucasian.
The group of students with whom I work are highly motivated and passionate about the process of learning. They are very interested in the process of acquiring information and sharing their knowledge with their community. They seem to thrive in learning experiences that are student directed and encourage them to apply their knowledge to "real life" concerns.
