I teach art to high school freshmen in an economically disadvantaged urban area of Texas. It is a Title I school with a large ESL and Special Ed population. Most of my students have not been exposed to a wide range of cultural and educational experiences due to financial restrictions in their homes, and often their schools. Many of them have never left their own neighborhood, and less than 5% have ever attended any of the museums in the city. Yet, they are eager to learn about fine art and to create.
