I teach in a public, Title I district. We have a high population of low income families. Our campus serves 5th and 6th grade students. We have a diverse population. Our students come to sixth grade with few experiences outside the community. When we begin to discuss rocks and minerals, the students have no connection to them. When we discuss diamonds being the hardness mineral, the students do not realize that they come from the Earth or what it takes to make diamonds ready to be placed in jewelry, etc. Many of them haven't even seen a diamond close up.
