My students are from low-income minority communities in a historically urban and poor community in the state of California. On an everyday basis my students experience and witness various forms of crime and violence. Coming from primarily single parent households headed by a mother, my students often see me as their male role model and see the school as a safe space for them outside of their own homes. Several times throughout the week my students share with me stories of hearing gunshots and learning about people close to them getting murdered. In addition to teaching my students in class, I allow the classroom to be a place for my students to vent and heal from their everyday reality. It pains me to realize that unlike a military soldier, my students never eventually leave the battlefield existing in their community.
