Special needs students have just that... Special Needs. Unfortunately, meeting their sensory needs are expensive and I cannot afford the items all on my own. The items I am asking for will help them feel safe and comfortable while learning new strategies and skills in the classroom that will help them graduate high school and possibly gain employment to enhance the rest of their lives. Students that have certain disabilities, such as autism, have sensory needs that need to be met before they can attend to any task, job, or assignment given to them. The things most people don't even think about are what these students seek on a daily basis.
Have you ever gotten a tight, deep hug from a loved one that made everything that was wrong in your life disappear? What about that heavy quilt that your grandmother had and would tuck you in with? Didn't it make you feel safe and protected?
That is what the items I'm requesting help my students feel. They allow students to received weighted, deep pressure touch at school. These blankets, lap pads, and stuffed animals are one of the most powerful tools a special needs teacher can have in their tool box. With these tools, we can help the anxious, upset, and those losing control safe and soundly.
