I teach second grade in an inner city Title I school in central North Carolina. We have a high immigrant population from cultures around the world. Our students speak over 30 languages and most have been in the country for only a few years. Their home life is transient and they have little support at home because parents are not literate in their own language let alone English and work more than one job. They are not able to visit the library often and have limited access to non fiction materials.
