I teach reading intervention classes to middle school students. Not only are my students special education students, but they are also mainly boys. At this age, they are already going through hormonal and developmental changes, and when you throw in learning or emotional disabilities, they can often feel buried. Our public school does its best to provide relevant materials, but budgets are so tight that we can't always meet everyone's needs. My students struggle with issues of reading and self-confidence which cannot be addressed if they have to share a book or read a ragged photocopy. All students should know the joy of a book in their hands.
