The students in my class are beginning English speakers. Some come to school knowing only how to say "teacher" and maybe "bathroom." Some have had little or no prior education in any language. Many are from low-income households.
These children come from all over the world -- Haiti, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Laos, Cape Verde -- but what they have in common is an eagerness to learn. The diversity of their educational backgrounds and the difficulty of learning grade-level material in a new language make creating meaningful, independent learning experiences a real challenge.
