My name is Ruth Canji and I teach 1st grade on the West Side of Chicago. The kids in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood face a lot of challenges. There are problems with gangs, high unemployment, access to fresh food and safe places to play. There is also a beautiful community spirit that shows in people who work to grow gardens, clean up the neighborhood, volunteer daily at Cameron School. I love being a part of a community that cares and is striving to make the world a better place. Every child at Cameron counts, and the teachers work hard to make sure that we meet the needs of our students academically, socially, and emotionally. I can't imagine more meaningful work!
