We are an urban neighborhood school with students representing many different cultures with diverse backgrounds. We have 77% on free or reduced meals and our school is host to the deaf and hard of hearing program, which attracts students from many different nearby areas. Our school has a strong PTA and wonderful volunteers who help students with a variety of tasks to ensure success. My students are all English language learners from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. As a result, parents are often unable to support English reading at home. However, in effort to validate and support bilingualism, first language literacy is essential. Providing a range of bilingual reading opportunities at school and home is essential for developing English language learners.
