The more a person feels like they have choices, the more in control they feel. I want to give my students many choices for seating, so they can determine what works best for them. Alternative seating provides students the chance to take some control of their learning style.
When students enter the classroom, I want them to feel comfortable choosing the seat that will help them be successful for that day's task. Some students do better standing, others sitting on the floor, while many still find the traditional desk useful. Every day a student can choose the seat that works best for them for that day's task. Students will use this year to reflect on their choices and find what works for them. They can use this information as they get older and creating a space to learn at home becomes much more critical.
