My 5th grade students are identified as gifted and attend our gifted center once a week for a day. They come from 20 different elementary schools in our district where students come from diverse backgrounds (both culturally and SES). They choose classes based on their interests and individual talents. Some of the students who take my book club class are avid readers who love reading anything and everything. Other students are reluctant readers who haven't found a book to spark their interest yet. By reading about a 12 year old boy who discovers one of his parents is a Greek god, these reluctant readers connect with the character, find out they love reading, and go on to read more -- often about mythology!
