My students come from a small community with low social economic background; mainly Hispanics. The city does not have a high school. They have so much potential and yet they have no means to let it out. The closest fast food restaurant is seven miles. The closest movie theater is 30 miles. The only things they have in town are schools and the the streets.
The students are capable but they don't have the right type opportunity to explore those potentials. The students have nothing better else to do so they focus on the negativity and the drama. I want to give the students a chance to open up their minds and realize that their is something outside their town.
Having them read about Freedom Writers will create a dialog of conversations and the things around them.
