As a teacher, my voice is my most powerful tool for instruction. This year, I have had the pleasure of teaching several students with hearing impairments. In order to help these students, I was loaned a REDCAT audio amplification system. The REDCAT system amplifies sound at an even volume across a room, without drop-off or having to raise one鈥檚 voice. The system helped my hearing impaired students, but I have been blown away by the unexpected impact this system has had on my overall effectiveness as a teacher.
When I use the REDCAT system, each student hears me at the same level no matter where they are in relation to me. Instead of speaking in a big 鈥渢eacher voice,鈥 I can use a conversational voice, and it is amplified to every student. I don鈥檛 have to raise my voice for attention, repeat directions, or give as many reminders. And my voice remains at the same level regardless where I am in the room, even when I鈥檓 鈥渨alking and talking.鈥 My students have learned that when the speaker is on, I expect them to focus on me; when the speaker is off, they are free to work independently or with their groups. Students with attention problems say that the system helps them concentrate on my voice.
Unfortunately, my REDCAT access was only a short-term loan. Given the impact the system has had on my entire class, I want to acquire a REDCAT audio system for PERMANENT use. Now that I have seen the benefits, I can鈥檛 imagine teaching without one.
The system I鈥檓 requesting includes additional microphones so that students can amplify their own voices during whole-class conversations. Imagine a classroom where everyone can hear everyone else. Now, THAT would be a game changer. Please help me make this a reality.
