Our school is science and technology based. But it's also a neighborhood school with the majority of these students from low income families and English Language Learners. There is only one subject that crosses all demographics and that is art; sadly this is one thing that is not offered at our school.
As a professional artist and teacher, I immediately offered my services to fill that need. Sadly funding is lacking in the school as a whole, and our art club suffers as a result. These kids normally can only doodle to release their inner art needs. Within our club we are able to not only learn about other artists, but satisfy our needs to express ourselves through art. These kids have shown tremendous potential as future artists, and within our short allotted time they are allowed to get messy and create! I frequently tell them of how you know you're a real artist when you get messy.
