We've all been in a class where we were forced to read a book or story that didn't speak to us. It is hard to get invested in something and find the true value in it if you don't feel like a part of you is in it. Not everyone can find Tom Sawyer, Hester Prynne, or Macbeth relatable. Student buy-in is an issue that I hope can be helped by expanding beyond some of the tried and true classics we all read in the past.
I hope that by providing a broader spectrum of reading material in my classroom, I can help my students find representation in what we read and that by doing that I am able to help them see beyond the horizon of the small rural town they live in.
