I teach middle school special education students in New York City. My students are culturally diverse and many are English Language Learners. Many students receive up to 2 free meals a day. My students have limited information about the world around them and many do not have Internet access in their homes. However, despite these challenges they are continuously curious about their city, cultures, and the world around them. Everyday I am impressed with their excitement and eagerness to learn. Recently, hurricane Sandy came to visit our neighborhood and many students were forced to relocate. Since returning they have expressed their interest in seeing more photos of the affects of this storm. My students were always curious but this hurricane has brought even more questions to the surface and created even more teachable moments.
