Our school is a Title I School in a moderate poverty area with a large population of English Language Learners. We are a K - 6 elementary school. My 6th grade students are highly motivated super scholars who are striving to prepare for Junior High School. All 6th graders in our district must take an important math test in the spring to determine the math class where they will be placed in 7th Grade. They know that success on this test will allow them to skip ahead to Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1 as a 7th Grader. I have explained the importance of mastering math fundamentals so they will be able to take more rigorous math classes in high school. They understand that getting to the higher level classes sooner will give them a better chance at getting into a better college or even getting a college scholarship. I also teach my students how math is related to science, engineering, and technology (STEM) and potential careers in these fields.
