Sadly, despite an extensive search throughout our community, our school gardening team has not been able to find a viable source of clean compost for our urban elementary school garden. Our 6 through 10 year old students are learning that healthy soil is essential to growing nutrient-dense crops, so, after long problem solving discussions, the children decided that they would make their own compost and self-sufficiently build healthy soil for their garden.
The initial disappointment of having no compost has turned into a joyful journey into the world of soil science and learning how to make compost. The materials being requested through Donors Choose will allow our children to safely and easily turn brown leaves and green cafeteria scraps into the nutrient-rich compost needed to make gardening with classmates and the community a memorable success and a life changing event. The requested composting bin will prevent critters from encroaching, while simultaneously allowing kid-friendly manipulation and easy aeration of the compost. In addition to the large capacity composter, the children will be getting wonderful books, tools and a desktop see-through composter that will allow them to witness composting up close and take samples for microscopic examination.
This Donors Choose project will immediately and forever improve the lives of our children, staff, community and our precious garden flora and fauna. Thank you Donors Choose for this greatly appreciated opportunity to enhance our world with the help of tiny gardening hands, minds and hearts.
