We are able to take these manipulatives and use them to help the teachers with standards such as ELA K.1 by having a physical demonstration of the key items within the text. This is helpful to us, and the teachers when we are working on literacy skills in class and are able to have the children respond, not verbally, but by holding the manipulative that they would think is the key item in the text at the time.
We also use our manipulatives in songwriting as a class and exploring musical concepts throughout the lessons. This standard, MU:Cr1.K.1, uses the manipulatives so that the students are able to combine certain musical concepts and help with creating a song that is then presented throughout the lessons for the other students. This is a way for our, mostly non-verbal, students to be able to express themselves and work together to create a work of art.
