My 8th-grade English students write almost every day in our classroom, but because my classroom set-up is still somewhat traditional, they do not have a diverse choice of seating options to really get comfortable during writing time. They need an inspiring and engaging atmosphere to motivate them to write more, write better, and write creatively. In 8th grade, quite a few of our boys are getting taller, and it is even uncomfortable for me to watch them try to get settled in our one-size-fits-all industrial-type desks. If they had multiple options such as moon saucer chairs, soft pads for sitting on the floor, bean bag chairs, or reclining stadium seats on the floor, they would not only be more comfortable, but also they would feel more empowered with choices.
Students have such different preferences and needs for what environments in which they want to spend their time writing, and while I try to accommodate them as much as possible, I do not have the flexibility in seating necessary. Having a choice in their seating options will also be more conducive to collaboration and communication during those times when I need them to share ideas and writing with their peers. Overall, my students will benefit from having more options because it will help increase their engagement, which will, in turn, increase their achievement, and it will create a more inviting atmosphere and experience for them. My students need your donations to make this change happen!
