My students are highly intelligent and love learning in my physical education and health class. These 2nd-5th graders are growing up in a district with some disadvantages seen in most urban schools. For many families, putting food in their plates daily is already a struggle. Filling up the hungry belly with any types of food is a priority over healthy choices. Certainly, if there was a choice this wouldn't be an issue, but when financial challenges hit, a high in fat content and bad cholesterol filled burger for $1 fits the bill. Encouraging their children to have physical activities at the park after school may not be too safe; for these places are often dangerous due to gang activities. With the damages caused by Hurricane Sandy, massive trees are still laying everywhere and so are the power lines. Many places look like war zones. It is a sad sight, but in school, the students feel safe and we can tell they are happy to be part of the school community.
