I teach a Math, Science, and Health to two classes of 4th grade students south of Atlanta. One of my classes has 90% of its students receiving EIP (early intervention program/students who struggle significantly academically) services for math. I work in a county where most northern schools have high test scores and graduation rates and are located in affluent communities. In contrast, most schools in the southern part of the district have consistently low test scores, high drop out rates, and high poverty communities. Our community of College Park, is rated as the most dangerous city in Georgia. Students have lost family members to violent crime, had their homes broken into, and been the victims of violence. I work hard so my students can feel safe at school and be distracted from some of the hardships they face when they go home. I strive to give my students the opportunity to change their futures.
