Full-day kindergarten has very high academic standards that my five and six year old learners are expected to meet. Our curriculum demands that the majority of our days are spent on reading, writing, math, science, and social studies skills. However, I recognize the value and importance of active play and exploration in my classroom.
I want to ensure that I provide my students with regular opportunities to socialize and engage with their peers, use their imaginations in unstructured active play, and build their fine and gross motor skills through sensory based, hands-on activities. The materials that I am requesting would provide my students with such opportunities on a daily basis. If my project was funded, I would set up the sand table in my classroom to create a station for my students to use in small groups on a daily basis. The kinetic sand's texture allows it to be molded and crafted in ways that regular sand cannot, which appeals to my students' creativity. The toy scoops and buckets would provide them with tools to use with the sand and would help to support their sensory needs.
I believe that in order to ensure that my kindergarten students are able to meet the academic demands of school, I must ensure that I am also providing them with the time and resources to grow socially and emotionally, as well. Active play is still an important part of my classroom, and these materials would help to support my students' imaginations and overall growth as learners.
