My school is in a low income and high poverty community in Staten Island, New York. It is a multicultural environment. There are 12 students and they are Title One, low poverty level, ESL, and Sp Ed. Many are first generation Americans. They do not have the luxury to go and buy books or go to the public library to bring books home. Many of their parents do not speak English and are illiterate in two languages. Many parents are day laborers that spend all their time finding work to provide a home for their family. They look to me and the classroom to create a comfortable and functional classroom. My students are enthusiastic learners, that deserve an inspiring learning environment. I have cultivated a community of learners, who now have a thirst for learning.
