I teach an enthusiastic group of second graders in a high priority school located in Chicago. Second grade is an exciting year, but it is also filled with pressure due to the expectation that by the end of the year students will meet expectations. For many of our incoming second-graders, learning to read is still a real struggle. Many students do not have a rich literary environment at home. It is a thrill to watch my students discover the wonder of a really good book, whether it be fact-based or fiction. By increasing my classroom library, I can offer my students the opportunity to choose the books that are most interesting to them and also at their reading level. When I see my students engaged in what they are reading, I know they are getting the opportunities to practice critical reading skills and strategies.
