Our students are predominantly African American and Hispanic students from low income housing. They receive breakfast and lunch everyday and are generally well mannered and kind children. However, the realities of their neighborhood are always present. Most students are not allowed to leave the house after school because of the gangs and violence in the area. Our PE program introduces new sports that many have never played before in a safe, structured environment. Their interest carries over into their studies and eventually into high school where many eventually join teams and make healthier life choices. Far too many of our students have a choice between gangs or education. Our school is a K-8 school in Far Rockaway, NY with about 900 total enrollment.
