My students attend a small, Title 1 elementary school in Nevada that was built in the 1950's. There is limited space and supplies available to them. Music is taught in the cafeteria and some interventions take place in the hallway. Every student gets free breakfast and lunch at school and they can even stay for an early dinner that is served around 3:00 pm.
My students are flexible, hardworking, and excited about learning. Some aspire to be professional soccer players or teachers. Many take care of younger siblings and share in the chores at home while their parents are working.
Many of my students are bilingual and are learning required grade level material with the added roadblock of a language barrier. One reason I love teaching music is that it is taught aurally first and can help students feel more confident expressing themselves in a second language. My students are as talented and capable as all other students in the nation. I just want to give them the same opportunities.
