My students are deaf and hard of hearing 5 to 7-year-olds with varying communication needs attending a total-communication integrated classroom at an Elementary school in a metropolitan area in California with a very mixed ethnic makeup. Some primarily communicate in spoken English, some mainly use sign language to communicate, some only communicate with gestures and a few sounds. Many of my students come from lower-income families and a few of my students also face some physical challenges or have special needs in addition to their hearing loss.
