I have worked in a lower economic district in NY for 10 years. The population is 80% Hispanic/Haitian (20% lived here less than a year) and 20% African American. Teaching these children has taught me so much. They are motivated to learn and want to succeed. They know their parents work hard to support them and want to learn so they can one day help the family as well. Building vocabulary of English language learners is essential. My students look forward to coming to school and I want to create an environment in our classroom where they develop a true love for learning and thrive.
