Through trivia games like Professor Noggin's Earth Science and Professor Noggin's Wonders of Science students practice content which improves understanding, which improves confidence which improves assessment performance. In the strategy game Photosynthesis, students acquire a deeper understanding of the factors affecting the natural process and how humans can manipulate those factors.
The games for this project were chosen to allow students to increase and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding in a competitive format in order to increase self confidence in their mastery of content. When a student is asked perform on an assessment, confidence in mastery of material can provide anxiety which, in turn, makes it harder for students to meet the assessment challenge. Learning and practicing in a game format allows students to gain confidence in their understanding.
