Five different languages are spoken in the classroom. Majority of the class speaks English as a second language. 95% of my class is 1st generation. My students impress me every day.
All of my students come from different parts of Oakland where crime is high and they and their loved ones are threatened. They constantly worry about the safety of their parents, cousins, aunts and uncles, and friends. They are victims of crime. Despite these hardships, they come to school every day with a smile on their face and eager to learn. They are hard workers, good friends to each other, good students, and show respect toward their peers and teachers.
