I am teaching Advanced Placement literature and my goal is to broaden the diversity of texts that students are exposed to in order to broaden their perspectives and contemporary American culture. Most of the literature we have is older and does not introduce the complexity of diversity. With the addition of contemporary drama I can broaden the discussion on diversity and the role it plays in building and rebuilding this country.
Lynn Nottage is a contemporary Pulitzer prize winning playwright that brings her perspective on American culture. Nottage writes about marginalized people in our society and brings in an awareness and appreciation of their role in creating this wonderful, if frustrating, country that we live in.
Nottage's writings about marginalized people as valued members of our society and worthy of our artistic community is a positive way to increase our empathy and to render visible the importance of all of our society's members.
