My students are diverse, but they all come from humble backgrounds. Most of them were born and raised on-island, but a number of them have recently moved from another country, such as Mexico, Russia, and the Philippines. Many of them have families that work on coffee or macadamia nut farms. Some of them work on the farms, themselves, to help their families. Some set lines or free-dive to get fish for the weekend, and others babysit while their parents work multiple jobs. Outside of school, several play team sports, such as football, basketball, swimming, soccer, and paddling. Some live close enough to walk to school, and others live far enough to commute 1-3 hours by bus. Either way, they come to school eager to learn and grateful to be taught. They have a solid rapport with their peers and teachers, and consider the school as a second home.
