A rug will help my students sit in an organized manner and collaborate with on another. Everyone will have their own space and at the same time be able to talk to a partner when needed.
My students are relatively young and need to have their own space to share ideas about math and reading. They sit on the carpet very often and they need to know that there is rug time or circle time. Rug time is very important in first grade because students have very short attention spans and moving from their tables to the rug, allows them to focus and learn more.
Communication is key in first grade. Speaking to each other is part of our daily activities; therefore proximity is crucial to the development of language.
