I teach at the Evergreen Middle School for Urban Exploration in New York City. My school is a blossoming environment where the interests of the students and what is best for them is at the forefront of everything that we do everyday. I want to reach the young girls in my school through a class in which they feel empowered, encouraged, and excited about being a young lady. I hope through this class, I can open their minds and their hearts to the struggles that they might face, or have faced already, and give them a place in which they feel safe to explore their fears, feelings, hopes, dreams and desires. Through the literature and film that I want to explore and discuss, I know that my girls will see and feel a connection with the characters that will help to reassure them that their struggles are not theirs alone and we have a community within our school in which we support each other and we are strong within ourselves.
