I teach Reading and Writing to diverse and inspiring seventh and eighth graders at a K-8 inner-city school that lacks many of the resources my students deserve. My students have a genuine thirst for knowledge and drive to succeed, and many are already avid readers. Those readers have exhausted my small classroom library, which contains mostly elementary books below their reading levels. The rest of my students are apathetic or negative about reading right now, having encountered little success finding books that are engaging and/or accessible at their reading levels. With the right library, I know attitudes will be transformed as students fall in love with reading all over again (or for some, for the first time!).
