I teach two fourth grade classes of about twenty-six students each in an inner-city charter school in Philadelphia. About twenty five percent of my students have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and receive special services inside and outside of the classroom. They are amazing students who work hard everyday to become the best people they can be.
Prior to our school becoming a charter school, it was the most violent elementary school in the state of Pennsylvania, with only one out of 500 students being proficient in both reading and math. In the six years that our organization has been in charge of managing the school, violent incidents have nearly been entirely eliminated and more than 50% of students are proficient in reading and mathematics. Mastery is a very energetic and dedicated organization that puts students' needs first and promotes a staff that goes above and beyond the call of duty to ensure students are successful.
