I am hoping to diversify the texts used in my classroom to reflect the diversity of my students in my class. I am already using the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian for my identity unit, and I want to pair that text with the comic I Am Alfonso Jones by Tony Medina, Stacey Robinson, and John Jennings .
Using this text, written by black man about a black youth, would pair perfectly with Part-Time Indian for my identity unit to reach as many of my students and increase engagement. My students deserve texts that reflect people and environments that they can connect to. My students are not all white and male, so having a protagonist that is a person of color is critical to helping students connect to texts.
