The time after lunch and recess seems to be the most hectic time of our school day! My students come back to the classroom all wound up and hyper. As a cool down, I do an enjoyment read aloud for about ten minutes. During that time we turn off the lights, turn on a lamp for mood lighting and read from a class novel. The students love this time! My project is asking for a class set of the novel The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and a classroom rug, which students can use to get comfortable at while reading.
Reading aloud to children expands their imaginations, supports language acquisition and promotes reading for enjoyment. These materials would greatly impact my students by giving them the opportunity to follow along in their own copy of the text, as the teacher models fluency, intonation, and expression while reading aloud. Having a classroom carpet will also help with that cool down time, by letting students relax and get comfy, and view reading as fun!
