My first graders are smart, kind, and eager to learn. Every day they come to school and actually WANT to learn more than they knew the previous day. Often times during a unit they become so drawn in that they feel like they are actually living the history. However, attending school and living in a small town in Mississippi, they are not close to any major historical cities or sights. The schools and parents do not have resources to send our students far away for learning. Many of my students have not been fortunate enough to travel and experience history in real life. They rely on the creativity and resources from their classroom teacher.
