"Go to where the you will make the greatest difference," stated my husband 21 years ago when I was making the decision of what district to teach in. I choose the neediest district around, and it is here that I have remained for the last 21 years. I like to use the words "greatly diverse" when I describe my students. In my classroom of 24, there are 5 different languages and half of my students were not born in the United States. I teach students who have been in foster care, many of my students have had a parent or loved one in jail, many of my students have a parent that has not graduated from high school. They face many challenges in their daily lives, but is is within the cover of a book that they can find safety and escape from their realities.
