My students need access to a variety of stimulating nonfiction books to read in order to strengthen their reading and research skills. I want students to be able to do research on topics of their choosing and share their reports with younger students in the school, but there are not enough books in my classroom or the school to allow them to have a good selection of nonfiction reading and topics.
The standards in fifth grade emphasize reading nonfiction, and I see this project involving reading, note-taking, research, and writing as an important building block for their success in middle school and beyond. I want to try to partially close the gap in resources for my students because they do not have access to a school library
