My first graders reflect a multitude of cultures, primarily Cambodian, Vietnamese, Hispanic and African-American. They attend a public K-4 elementary school in an ethnically diverse city in MA. Unfortunately, more than 80% live in poverty and many in unsafe homes and neighborhoods. A majority are also second language learners, and suffer from lack of parental support, involvement and resources. These children often come to school exhausted and hungry but eager nonetheless. Still young physically, emotionally and developmentally, they must adjust to the demands and rigor of our routines and curriculum within the context of their challenging social situations. Their lack of background experience also limits their input so it is difficult to show progress, particularly in literacy. They do love technology though and are especially responsive to stories, music and videos. With a wide range of backgrounds and ability levels, technology can help me better meet their individual needs.
