My school is in an urban district where 85% of our students are economically disadvantaged. At first glance my students are loud, boisterous, and seem to dislike anything having to do with learning. After getting to know them, you realize that above all else they are frustrated. The opportunities that many students are preparing for in the future are not considerations for my children. After a month with my students I realized that what they needed most was a set of skills that they could use in all subjects, not only math.
This realization led me to start using Interactive Notebooks in my math class. By putting effort into the notebooks, making them look professional, and keeping them as evidence of their own knowledge my students have blossomed into eager learners. The skills they are employing are being transferred to other classes and students of all skill levels are finding success in this project.
