I teach 22 highly energetic kindergartners. Our school is a free and reduced lunch school in the city. Many students do not have books at home or parents that are able to read to them.
My students love to hold a book and read to each other. They get so excited when they recognize a word.
I have had many district supervisors come into our room to observe my students working together and all say they do a wonderful job but need more challenging readers. Our district can't afford to supply them to us. They have looked at closed schools and were not able to find any suitable.
My students are becoming great readers but need more exposure to different readers. Currently we do not have enough books for them to work in groups, which helps them monitor each other and encourage reading.
